PRAYING THE NEWS

There are good reasons why we should keep up with local and world news.

Firstly Acts 17:24f says “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth…he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.” As volatile and uncertain as our world is today, we are reminded here that our Lord is Creator and Sustainer, and must therefore be concerned and involved in all that happens in it, however broken by sin it becomes. This includes the physical environment as well as the wellbeing of every tribe, language, and nation and by extension - every human being created in His image.

Secondly Acts 17:26 reminds us that “From one man (Adam), he made every nation of men that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live …” The amazing spectrum of humanity with all its ethno-linguistic diversity prompts us to celebrate His wisdom in creation. Because the history and geography of nations is God-determined, each must mutually respect the rights of their neighbours to exist and prosper.

Finally V 27: “God did this (guided each nation’s place and development in the world) so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him…”  God’s intent was that each person from each culture should seek and find Him in order to have a personal relationship with Him. For God is not just concerned about their geo-political/economic realms. He is ultimately concerned that every person He has created, come to acknowledge, trust and worship Him as Saviour and Lord. Indeed the Incarnation shows that God loves and desires to relate with all people of all times and cultures. Jesus came to be the Saviour of the world not just one nation (John 3.16).

This is why we must be concerned with what is going on in the world, and that concern must be expressed in awareness which fuels our prayerfulness. The histories of each nation are bound up in the history of mankind which will one day culminate in the conclusion of His Story: the Return of Jesus Christ to this world. Indeed every passing day brings us a day closer to that great Event, when every knee will bow and every tongue confess He is Lord.

Keeping up with the news is not merely for making conversation, answering quiz questions or monitoring the stock market. It is to show solidarity with our fellow human beings as well as to track and support God’s Kingdom work in prayer. Better still if it moves us to show practical concern for our fellow human beings who suffer due to wars, natural disasters, genocide, diseases etc, not to mention moral failures like corruption, slavery and sexual abuse.

God as Creator is deeply concerned for all people living in His world. As his appointed stewards of planet Earth we also must show concern in every way we can, even if it is just to whisper a prayer for a crisis or need which we have just seen or read about. Be a compassionate participant not a passive spectator.
