Praise God for our 30th Anniversary Lunch at Orchid Country Club on Sat 1 July 2017. It was a joyful, memorable and enjoyable occasion which gave glory to God for our 30-year journey from Bkt Arang to Woodlands.

When we are driving we spend most of our time looking forwards. But it is also a good practice to glance at our rear-view mirror to take a backward glance to see what is behind us. Anniversaries are occasions when we glance backwards as well as forwards. On this our 30th anniversary, I believe God wants us to remember two key words: Carried & Careful.

Firstly God CARRIED BCC through our 30-year journey from our mother church, Bethesda Church Bkt Arang through various locations in the North Eastern belt of Singapore (Thomson, Yishun, Sembawang, Admiralty, etc). This reminds us of the Israelites journeying through the wilderness towards the Promised Land. In Exodus 19:4 God said, “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.” God carried his people just as a mother eagle cared for, fed and protected her young. We are told that when baby eaglets were too weak to fly they sometimes fell, and mother eagle would catch them on her wings and fly them to safety. What an amazing aerobatic manouevre!

Matthew Henry adds that “other birds carry their young in their talons, but the eagle upon her wings, so that even those archers who shoot arrows cannot hurt the young ones, unless they first shoot through the old one.” God protected and nurtured His chosen people as they journeyed, and God did the same for BCC throughout our 30 years too.

Secondly God wants us to be CAREFUL. He told the people when they were to follow every command ie to obey Him. Indeed Deuteronomy 8:1 says “Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter the land that the Lord promised to your forefathers. Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.” Obedience was the first priority for them as it is for BCC.

Then secondly, Deut 4:9 “Be careful and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.”  Be careful to teach the next generation so they will be ready to serve God in their generation.

Lastly Deut 6:10-14 contains 2 warnings: “When the Lord your God brings you into the land… a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant… be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt… Fear the Lord your God, serve him only...”  Be careful not to be complacent and fourthly, be careful not to compromise.

Having gone through the high-intensity wilderness training, there was a danger of the Israelites getting lazy, complacent, sloppy and letting down their guard. Similarly we can also get complacent and think we have arrived! We have our own facilities now, and we deserve to relax! I don’t think the word “retirement” is found in the Bible!

I close with a quote from Michael Griffiths former International Director of Overseas Missionary Fellowship:

“Being a Christian is not simply a matter of signing an eternal life-insurance policy, getting a ticket to heaven and twiddling your thumbs until you go. I hope you will not be a wishy-washy, uncommitted kind of Christian, but one who will respond to Christ’s call to “wildness and risk, humility and love.”

May God give us courage and strength to be a Bible-centred, Kingdom-minded, Cross-shaped and Spirit-led church to His Glory.
